Delegation from Lebanon received at the Mayor's Office

May 17, 2019: a delegation led by Alexander Yordanov - grandson of Pavel Fyodorovich Yordanov - was received at Taganrog City Hall by the city officials.

In June 2016 the first descendant of Yordanov family came to Taganrog and Russia for the first time since the end of the Russian Civil War. This time representatives of the Russian community in Beirut are visiting their historic home city to see the sites related to the life and work of Pavel Yordanov, who was born in the city of Taganrog in 1858 and was linked by ties of kinship to many other Taganrog families, such as Laquiere, Alferaky, Sinodi-Popov, Sarandinaki, Komneno-Varvakis, etc. He was also Anton Chekhov's schoolmate - for two years they attended together the same class of the Taganrog Boys' School (now - "Chekhov Gymnasium" Museum), and both earned a degree in medicine. After his graduation from Moscow State University, Pavel Fyodorovich Yordanov returned to his home city of Taganrog to work as a public health doctor, and later was elected alderman at the local city council (duma).

Meeting at the Mayor's Office
Yordanov family members met Taganrog City Manager Mr. Andrei Lisitsky, City Council President & City Executive Ms. Inna Titarenko and Foreign Relations Officer Mr. Alexander Mirgorodskiy.

"I am very pleased that descendants of an outstanding Taganroger are visiting their historic homeland. Taganrog has a rich tradition of preserving and honoring its historical landmarks and experiences", noted Mr. Lisitsky.

The visitors from Beirut are planning to participate in several events of "Defense of Taganrog in 1855" festival and in the opening of the Russian-Lebanese exhibition "Dear Valued Pavel Fyodorovich...", which is a joint project with Taganrog Chekhov Memorial Museum Estate.

Alexander Y. Yordanov plans to revisit Taganrog again sometime in 2020 to mark the centennial death anniversary of Pavel Yordanov, former Taganrog City Council's president (1905-1909) and to give the museum his grandfather's bust.

At the end of the meeting, both sides exchanged souvenirs and took photos.
