September 14, 2019: the opening of the Taganrog Museum of Architecture and Urbanism's exhibit "A Time-Lapse Portrait of the City" was held within the framework of 321th City Day celebrations. It focuses on the development of Taganrog's town-planning, historical buildings and its residents' modes of life from 17th century up to present times. The exposition presents pages of the city's history regarding the construction and destruction of churches, the architecture of the first Soviet five-year plans, experiments in the styles of constructivism and the Stalinist neo-classicism, the Khrushchev and Brezhnev periods.
The first part of the exhibit (7 halls) was
unveiled to the public on June 25, 2019. The opening ceremony on September 10 was attended by Rostov Oblast Minister of Culture Anna Dmitrieva, Taganrog City Manager Andrey Lisitsky, Deputy City Manager for Social Affairs Irina Golubeva, deputies of
Taganrog City Council, directors of academic institutions and regional museums.
The participants of the opening ceremony were led through all 11 halls of the 500 sq. m.-exhibit by museum's director Marianna Grigoryan, who introduced the visitors to the history of town-planning from late 17th century until early 1990s.
On the following day Taganrog Museum of Architecture and Urbanism was unveiled to the local community and the
official delegation of the German Chekhov Society from the partner town of
Badenweiler. The presentation ended with a surprise "birthday cake" in the form of Taganrog St. Trinity Fortress.
The museum was established in 1981 to focus on the development of Taganrog's town-planning, historical buildings and its residents' modes of life from 17th century up to present times. The new vision for the city-owned museum is a thoughtful combination of unique authentic exhibits and modern interactive features. Its creation resulted from the expansion of our knowledge about three centuries of city - many unexplored facts of its history are now brought to light.
Visitors and residents of the city are welcome to see the new exhibit "A Time-Lapse Portrait of the Taganrog" Tuesday to Sunday, from 10AM to 6PM in the Taganrog Town-Planning Museum at Ulitsa Frunze 80.
