Taganrog Celebrates its 76th Liberation Day

September 3, 2019: every year on August 30, residents of Taganrog commemorate their city's liberation day from Nazi German occupation in 1943. This year marks the 76th anniversary of Taganrog's Liberation.

Commemorative events for the city's liberation by the Soviet Army were held August 26-30, 2019 with the participation of delegates representing the local government, defense and law enforcement agencies, youth organizations, Cossacks, community groups and Azerbaijan Republican Committee for War, Military and Police Veterans.

President of Taganrog City Council and Taganrog City Executive Inna Titarenko addressed the audience gathered in front of Stella of Military Glory. She highlighted that the day of August 30, 1943 has a special significance in the city's three centuries of history and can be considered as its second re-birth. According to statistics and historic records, 858 buildings including 15 schools, 7 hospitals and major factories were destroyed during 683 occupation days.

The participants of the rally paid tribute to those who fell for this country's freedom and independence during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 by observing a minute of silence and laid a wreath and flowers at Taganrog Stella of Military Glory.

The 76th Liberation Day celebration culminated in a fireworks show that illuminated the sky at 10PM.
