The Sword of Victory Donated to Taganrog Group of Museums

February 6, 2023: The Sword of Victory Handover Ceremony Was Held at Taganrog Museum of Local History, more commonly known as the Alferaki Palace on February 2 - the 80th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazi troops by the Soviet military forces in the Battle of Stalingrad, 1943.

Deputy City Manager Alexey Sanin participated in the event on behalf of Taganrog Local Government. He handed over the work of art to Mrs. Yelizaveta Lipovenko, Director of Taganrog Group of Museums. She mentioned the symbolism of the gift - this year Taganrog celebrates the 325th anniversary of its foundation, 80th anniversary of the liberation from Nazi German occupation, and 125th anniversary of the opening of the first city museum.

The original Swords of Victory were produced in the city of Zlatoust in 1945 to be given to Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, who were the Allied leaders of World War II along with Joseph Stalin. The tradition was renewed after seventy years, when 9 Russian Hero Cities received the Swords of Victory. Last year, on Peter the Great's 350 birth anniversary, Taganrog was among the 45 Cities of Military Glory to receive its copy during the ceremony held in Moscow's Museum of the Great Patriotic War at Poklonnaya Gora.

Taganrog was conferred "The City of Military Glory" status on November 3, 2011. A few months later, a ceremony was held in Kremlin, where Russian president presented the Mayor of Taganrog with the certificate conferring the title of City of Military Glory. In 2015 the City of Military Glory stela was inaugurated in Taganrog.
The exhibition is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 AM to 5 PM. Venue: Taganrog Museum of Local Lore and History (Alferaki Palace), Ulitsa Frunze 41.
