January 20, 2026: on January 19, Orthodox Christians of Taganrog participated in traditional Epiphany swimming, which was held on Pushkin Embankment in front of Albatross Cafe.
In total, over 850 followers of the Russian Orthodox faith went for a polar bear plunge in the Gulf of Taganrog, celebrating the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River.

The weather was freezing (windy and 15 degrees below zero), so the ritual posed real challenge for the believers. Changing facilities and a concession stand were organized within the surrounding area. A considerable number of officials kept a strict vigil there, including rescue divers, policemen, physicians, and volunteers.
The bravest men and women who went for a polar bear plunge were greeted on shore by numerous spectators, support groups and were offered hot tea and coffee. The Great Blessing of Waters and church services were held in all Taganrog churches.
"I express my deepest gratitude to our rescue divers, law enforcement officers, and medical personnel who stood guard near the ice hole that day and were ready to help if needed," wrote Taganrog City Executive Svetlana Kambulova in her Telegram channel.
The traditional Epiphany swimming event took place without incident.
