International Theater Festival "In the Home City of Anton Chekhov" Held in Taganrog

September 23, 2019: the new edition of the international theater festival "In the Homeland of Anton Chekhov" was held in Taganrog on September 17-22, 2019 within the framework of the Russian Year of Theater.

The tradition of this festival goes back to 1980, and received an international status in 1993. In this short period of time, theater companies and artists from Russia, Japan, Germany, Spain, Italy, Australia, South America, Georgia, Croatia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Great Britain have participated in the event.

This year theater companies from Taganrog, Moscow, Perm, Moscow Oblast, Ryazan and Shymkent (Kazakhstan) performed on stage of the historical Taganrog Chekhov Drama Theater. The famous theatrical critic Lana Garon was the guest of honour at the theater festival.

The festival program consisted of such classical performances as "The Lower Depth" (by Maxim Gorky), "Uncle Vanya" (by Anton Chekhov), "The Importance of Being Earnest" (by Oscar Wilde), The Cherry Orchard (by Anton Chekhov) and The Seagull (by Boris Akunin). It included many other events, such as the meet-the-artist sessions with People's Artist of Russia Sergey Garmash and artistic managing director of Perm Theater Sergey Fedotov.

The festival was held at the highest professional level. The guests of the festival had a unique opportunity to visit memorial Chekhov sites and other places of interest in Taganrog. All performances received full attendance and excellent press coverage.
