September 26, 2014: the city and region were recovering Thursday and Friday after a major storm on September 24 that included torrential rains and hurricane-like winds that left thousands without power. According to weather reports, the wind speeds were as high as 83 miles per hour.
The hardest hit area were parts of downtown in proximity of the Gulf of Taganrog (Pushkin Embankment, Admiral Cornelis Cruijs Street and public beaches) that were covered at least with as much as two-three feet of water. According to the latest information, 452 trees were downed and on September 24 over 40 thousand people were without power. The emergency crews and power companies continue to work 24 hours a day and the most people would have electric service restored by the upcoming weekend.
