Taganrog Marks The Day of Remembrance and Sorrow

June 22, 2021: the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow was marked in Russia today. It was timed to coincide with the start of World War II, when Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union.

A number of activities were organized in Taganrog to commemorate the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow. In particular, representatives of the municipal committees, led by Taganrog City Manager Andrei Lisitsky and President of Taganrog City Council (Duma) and City Executive Inna Titarenko, laid flowers at "The City of Military Glory" Stela. Taganrog Local Government officials also laid flowers at memorials "Tank", "To Pilots", "To Underground Heroes", "To Sailors", "To Soviet and Party Officials", "Cup of Bitterness". They also visited the Immortality Alley and Gully of Death.

According to tradition, one of the largest all-Russian memorial events, "the Candle of Remembrance", started on the night of June 22. It united the whole country, including Taganrog, - candles in honor of the fallen heroes were lit at the monuments and memorials. Last night, in the framework of the patriotic action "Fiery Pictures of War", activists created an outline of the well-known memorial in Petrushino village, Gully of Death, in front of Taganrog City Hall. The picture was made of 8 thousand burning candles.

Russians, among them residents and visitors of Taganrog, observed a minute of silence in solemn commemoration. It began on June 22 at 12:15. At that moment, on June 22, 1941, an appeal was made to the inhabitants of the country, following the announcement of an attack by fascist troops on the USSR.
