January 29, 2025: the home city of
Anton Chekhov paid tribute to its great townsman. Traditionally this day is celebrated by a program of commemorative events organized by Taganrog Arts & Culture Council and Taganrog Group of Museums.
The future world-famous playwright writer spent 19 years, nearly half of his life, in the home city where many streets and houses still look the way Chekhov saw them more than a century ago. Taganrog City has been protecting all memorial sites related to the years of Anton's childhood, adolescence and youth.
Chekhov had done a lot for his home city. He did all he could to help Taganrog become a better and a more beautiful city. Taganrog turned for him into some kind of a duty, as the writer kept sending books from his personal library, many of which autographed by their authors, and buying dictionaries, encyclopedias, scientific literature according to a wish list that he had established. Thus an extensive and comprehensive library was created with foreign language literature and reference sections. In many respects thanks to Chekhov's efforts, the Cape of Taganrog is now crowned with a Peter The Great statue, created by the famous sculptor Mark Antokolsky (1903).
In the morning citizens and guests of the city gathered in front of Chekhov Monument on Taganrog's Red Square: City Executive Svetlana Kambulova, City Council President Roman Koryakin, deputy of Rostov Oblast Legislative Assembly Tatyana Mikheyeva, director of Taganrog Group of Museums Yelizaveta Lipovenko, City Council's deputies, students, representatives of NGOs, and museum employees.
"Today, thinking of Anton Pavlovich, we pay tribute to the great writer, whose writings live on, and still thrills the hearts of people around the world" said Taganrog City Executive Svetlana Kambulova.
