Croatian Ambassador to the Russian Federation visiting Taganrog

May 20-21, 2008: Bozo Kovacevic - Croatian Ambassador to the Russian Federation and Belarus made a two-day visit to Taganrog and Rostov Oblast.

Ambassador Kovacevic came to attend the First International Ranevskaya Drama Festival "The Great Province" in Taganrog. The theater Zhar Ptitsa from Zagreb (Croatia) presented at the festival its one-person play "Lost Dreams" (based on Chekhov's play "The Cherry Orchard"). The play was staged at the historical building "The Chekhov Shop", where young Anton Chekhov and his classmates produced the first "home" plays.

This was the first visit of the Ambassador to the city of Taganrog. Bozo Kovacevic visited Chekhov Birth House, Chekhov Shop, Taganrog Museum of Art, Alferaki Palace, other monuments and attended the play "Uncle Vanya" by the Sterlitamak State Russian Drama Theater.

On May 21, Bozo Kovacevic was received at the Mayor's Office. The Croatian Ambassador shared his impressions of the city: "I have a very good impression of Taganrog. All Taganrog citizens who introduced me to museums are great enthusiasts and love their home city. It was very interesting. A person who read Chekhov, and comes to visit his home city, will have an opportunity to better understand the author, to see the streets where Chekhov walked and what Chekhov described in his works. This city lives and breathes Chekhov. I hope that the spectators will appreciate the play by our theater. It may be strange to listen Chekhov's classic lines in Croatian language, but it's good to remember that the first translation of "The Seagull" was made into Croatian. Every year, Chekhov plays are staged in Zagreb and throughout Croatia."

Mayor Fedyanin and Ambassador Kovacevic exchanged their views on opportunities of working together within the framework of cultural exchanges and IBSC.
