Preparations for Chekhov's 150th Anniversary underway in Taganrog

February 14, 2006 was signed the Decree of the President of Russian Federation Number 111 "On Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Anton Chekhov".

Mr. Sokolov, Minister of Culture and Mass Media of Russian Federation headed the organization committee at the state level. The Rostov Oblast Governor Vladimir Chub also entered into the national organization committee. Among the buildings of Chekhov's cultural heritage listed in the Federal Plan are the Taganrog State Literary, History and Architecture Museum Complex, The Public Library named after Chekhov and the Chekhov Monument.

April 6, 2007 was signed the Order of the Rostov Oblast Government Number 135 "On Preparations and celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Anton Chekhov". The regional organization committee was approved, headed by the Rostov Oblast Governor Vladimir Chub.

The Taganrogers who entered into the regional committee are: Mayor of Taganrog Nikolay Fedyanin, Sergey Gert - director of the Taganrog Drama Theatre named after Chekhov, Marina Larionova - reader (assistant professor) at the literature chair of the Taganrog Teachers College.

February 27, 2006 was signed the Order of the Mayor of Taganrog Number 601 "On approval of organization committee for preparations and celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Anton Chekhov." Forty-one people from different fields are entered into the committee.

Renovation, restoration and reconstruction of buildings related to Anton Chekhov.

The program provides construction of new buildings besides repairs, restorations and reconstruction of buildings of the culture heritage (The Public Library named after Chekhov, Taganrog Drama Theatre, the Chekhov Monument).

Equipment of the cultural heritage buildings with modern amenities

Regional budget in 2007 allocated means for re-equipment of Taganrog State Literary, History and Architecture Chekhov Museum Complex and for Taganrog Museum of Art. Federal budget (2007-2009) is planning:

  • New exhibition at the Chekhov Literature Museum Complex
  • Equipment for re-exposition in the Historical-ethnographical Museum (Alferaki Palace).

Promotion, scientific research and publications of Chekhov's literature heritage.

  • Municipal budget for 2007 has provided means for project documentation for production and installation of sculptures of characters based on Chekhov's books.
  • From Mars 15 to April 30, 2007 a creative contest is open. Professional sculptors and architects as well as amateur artists are invited to participate in the contest. Chekhov Public Library is accepting project proposals until April 30. The exhibition of contestants' works will be held May 1-10, 2007 in the Chekhov Public Library.

February 01, 2007 was signed the Order of the Rostov Oblast Government Number 13 "On allocating financial resources for the Municipality of Taganrog", which provided renovation for:

  • Building of the Taganrog Boys Gymnasium where Anton Chekhov studied. It is planned to widen the area of the Literature Museum for creation of the Chekhov Center for children and modern repository for museum reserves.
  • Memorial apartment where Pyotr Tchaikovsky stayed.
  • The Gorky Park.
  • Part of barracks of the Trinity Fortress (end of 18th century).
  • The Alexander 1st Palace, the memorial building where died Russian tsar Alexander I and where stayed Alexander Pushkin, Nikolay Raevskiy, Vassily Zhukovsky and Ivan Aivazovsky.

Reconstruction, repairs and improvement of public-cultural buildings

It is planned to realize:1. Fundamental repairs of Chekhov Street (Ulitsa Chekhova), 2. Equipment with modern amenities of squares named after Peter the Great and Anton Chekhov, 3. Equipment with modern amenities of the downtown Taganrog, Pushkin's embankment, 4. Fundamental repairs and restoration of municipal houses in the historical part of the city 5. Reconstruction and equipment with modern amenities of the Gorky Park.

Additionally, it is planned to complete in 2007 the reconstruction of the Taganrog Chekhov Drama Theatre.
