February 3, 2014: a record 16 inches of snow blanketed the home city of Anton Chekhov on January 28-29, 2014 the day world-known playwright was born. The lowest temperature for these days reached -18 degrees Fahrenheit, which was even worse due to an unusually strong wind. The snowstorm situation was so bad in the whole Rostov Oblast, that on January 30 governor Vasily Golubev declared a state of emergency. Public schools remained closed for two days. The Taganrog local government speedily responded to weather situation, deploying plow trucks and backhoes, promptly clearing 117 streets.
The Taganrog department of Ministry for Emergency Situations had tow trucks and specialized vehicles on hand to quickly rescue stalled and remove abandoned cars from the streets. Janitors, homeowners and local businesses have cleaned snow and ice from sidewalks on 191 streets. Municipal department of sanitation continues snow removal and salting to this day.
All buses, streetcars, and trolleybuses rolled out to their routes.
