Lüdenscheid, Germany

Lüdenscheid, the county town of the Märkischer Kreis rural district, is situated in North Rhine–Westphalia Land (state), west-central Germany, in the hilly, wooded Sauerland region between the Lenne and Volme rivers.

Lüdenscheid is a modern economic and service center, and at the same time it is the social and cultural heart of the Märkischer Kreis. Good infrastructure and its ideal setting in the magnificent Mittelgebirge landscape guarantee a wide range of opportunities to the 81,000 inhabitants as well as to visitors.

Taganrog and Lüdenscheid signed their sister city agreement back in 1991 and friendship societies promoting friendship between the people of Russia and Germany were formed in both cities in 1992. Taganrog and Lüdenscheid have been always implementing a policy of democratic diplomacy. The German friendship society Lüdenscheid-Taganrog made a major contribution to development of cooperation between the sister cities, initiated and realized several projects, including establishing a medical and social aid center in Taganrog within the framework of a TACIS program.

The cities have actively exchanged college and university students. Music bands from Taganrog visited Lüdenscheid in 1993 (LEL), 1995 and 2001 (DIVO), 2001 and 2004 (LIK).

The local governments of both cities are commited to developing undestanding and friendship between the people of Russia and Germany.
