March 7, 2025: Renovation works are underway at the site of the former male gymnasium in Taganrog, which is a regional cultural heritage landmark, with plans to recreate the Gymnasium Garden. The capital repairs are 55% complete, and the project is expected to be finished by October 2025, according to the press service of the Taganrog Literary and Historical-Architectural Museum-Reserve.
The restoration project involves creating a modern public space based on historical elements. The museum director, Yelizaveta Lipovenko, mentioned that work is currently underway to lay engineering communications such as lighting, video surveillance, water supply, and drainage. These preparatory steps are essential to ensure comfort and safety for both residents and visitors.
Some old trees, deemed hazardous, have been cut down, but the remaining green areas will be restored and integrated into the new garden.
The idea for the reconstruction arose after the demolition of School No. 2 named after A.P. Chekhov. The recreation of the Gymnasium Garden is an important step in creating a significant public space next to the historic gymnasium building.
The new garden's design was developed by Taganrog architects Vladislav and Yelena Fedorenko, and landscape designer Anna Grin. The future garden will be divided into three thematic zones, including a historical cherry orchard featuring the "Vladimir Cherry" variety that
Chekhov had planted in Melikhovo. There will also be a flowerbed and a linden alley connecting various parts of the garden.
The garden will be equipped with modern lighting solutions, and a stage for events will also be set up.
Almost 125 million rubles have been allocated for the restoration of the Gymnasium Garden. This project will be a significant part of
Taganrog's urban revitalization program and will enhance the city's landscape.
