August 15, 2024:
the 22 pieces of art, which were impaired in
the blast of a Ukrainian S-200 surface-to-air missile on July 28, 2023 have been put on display in Taganrog Museum of Art. The exhibition enitled "The Saved Masterpieces. State Russian Museum to Taganrog" consists of artworks by Valentin Serov, Konstantin Korovin, Zinaida Serebryakova, Philip Malyavin, Nikolai Roerich, Stanislav Zhukovsky, Serafima Blonskaya, and others. In total, 18 paintings, 3 drawings, and the statue "The Portrait of a Boy" by Christopher Gevorkyan are placed in six halls of the museum's historic building (Ulitsa Alexandrovskaya, 56).
The pieces of art have been supported with showcases of all the stages of the restoration works made by specialists of the State Russian Museum, Saint Petersburg. The film on their activity is also shown to the visitors of the exhibition.
It took eight months to bring the impaired artworks back to life. Beforehand, the specialists from Saint Petersburg had scrutinized the artworks in order to evaluate the damage. They recorded the losses, preserved ailing fields of the paintings, and packed the artworks in special boxes in order to transport them to the
repair center of the State Russian Museum. That is where the restoration artists
nullified all the ruptures and stretches. Impaired stretchers and frames were substituted with new ones. The result of this demanding and arduous work is that now nothing reminds of the previous distressing state of the paintings, drawings, and the statue.
After the completion of the restoration works, the pieces of art were displayed at the exhibition titled
"The Saved Masterpieces. State Russian Museum to Taganrog," which was held in Saint Petersburg's Marble Palace within the framework of "Neradovsky Readings" academic workshop in April-May 2024. This exhibition was supposed to last two weeks, but it received a great deal of attention and hence the term was extended.
Until the end of October, visitors and residents of Taganrog are welcome to see The Saved Masterpieces. State Russian Museum to Taganrog Tuesday to Sunday, from 10AM to 6PM in Taganrog Museum of Art at Ulitsa Alexandrovskaya, 56.
