Cultural Heritage Sites to Be Renovated in 2023

January 12, 2023: 18 cultural heritage sites are to be renovated in 2023. The listing includes such remarkable sites as the house where the world-famous playwright Anton Chekhov staged the plays in his youth years (Ulitsa Frunze 22) and the house of Fyodor Yordanov - a merchant of the 3rd guild (Ulitsa Grecheskaya 76). The buildings were erected in the beginning - middle of the 19th century. Renovation specialists will pay particular attention to facades, foundations, cellars, roofs, gas supply and electricity power systems.

Fyodor Yordanov was the father of Pavel Yordanov, Mayor of Taganrog (1905-1909) and Anton Chekhov's schoolmate. Descendants of Pavel Fyodorovitch Yordanov from France and Lebanon visited Taganrog several times in 2016 and 2019, participating in the exhibition project "Dear Valued Pavel Fyodorovich..." at Taganrog Town-Planning Museum.

It is by now a good tradition to care for Taganrog's cultural heritage sites. For example, in 2022, the renewal of Taganrog Museum of Local Lore and History, commonly known as the "Alferaki Palace," was completed. The "Alferaki Palace" is an important name in Taganrog's history. The first owners of the building was the rich Greek family of Alferaki (Alpheraky). In the second half of the 19th century, local merchants rented it with the adjacent garden to function as a club for the Commercial assembly. Now the building accommodates the Museum of Local Lore and History.
