"Dramatized" history lessons held in Taganrog schools

February 26, 2019: the city of Taganrog saw the launch of a new educational project for kids - "dramatized" history lessons. Classes take place not in the classroom, but in the vaulted cellar of the oldest church in town. These lessons teach children about important, but little-known chapters in the history of this city - "Defense of Taganrog in 1855".

"Our historic and patriotic project "Russians do not surrender their cities" has been backed by the Presidential Grants Foundation for the second consecutive year. First, in 2018 we visited all Taganrog schools and colleges to hold dramatized costumed lessons and lectures dedicated to local history and heroic defense of the city during Crimean War. Last year we have involved over a thousand school and college students. Now in the second stage we go out of the classrooms to attend the sites, where Taganrog's history unfolded", told Yelena Sirota.

Historical walking tours to the Crimean War sites, as well as writing of articles and history essays are also organized under the project "Russians do not surrender their cities". An important aspect of this initiative is that about 700 school students from all Taganrog schools take part in the project. Every participant will receive an elective course textbook dedicated to the "Defense of Taganrog in 1855" to deepen subject matter knowledge.

The next 4th edition of "Defense of Taganrog in 1855" will be held May 17-19, 2019.
